Overseas education: Benefits, Pitfalls and how to approach it.
The world has become small and is becoming smaller with the passage of time and with the proliferation of technology. Today it is not uncommon to see students from the third world or Europe opting to travel overseas for education. What was once limited to the wealthy few is now becoming affordable for the middle class. The reasons for such growth in overseas education are:

  1. Third world countries have fine universities but very few institutions feature in the top 500 institutions of the world.
  2. Competitiveness in obtaining admissions in universities
  3. High fees and donations or capitation fees
  4. Better positions and salaries for overseas educated professionals in domestic corporates.
  5. Opportunity to work overseas in a global environment
  6. Opportunity to obtain residency in the overseas country of study, thereby more than doubling job opportunities.
  7. Language skills improve with an overseas education thereby improving communication skills
  8. Overseas education in the developed world allows for global recognization of qualifications. However, students will have to be cautious which country they select for study. Studying in the Philippines or West Indies will not have benefits. E.g.: A medical degree from West Indies may not even be recognized in India. Overseas Education has a lot of benefits, but country selection is very critical.
  9. Whether you are doing a graduate program or a post graduate program or a diploma, any overseas education has the benefit of part time employment during the course of study.

The major 3 considerations for course selection:

  1. Course Recognition
  2. Post educational opportunities
  3. Cost and Return on investment.

Course Recognition:

It is one of the most important aspects when selecting an overseas course. The course should be recognized globally providing you the opportunity to be employable globally. This is the most important consideration.
Examples of issues with non-recognition:

  • Doing a Medical degree in West Indies may not be recognized. A medical degree from West Indies is unlikely to be recognized even in India.
  • If your intent to do nursing is to seek an overseas employment opportunity, it would be more cost effective and faster if you do your Nursing Course in Canada or in New Zealand where opportunities exist for Nurses to study, and to become a permanent resident after obtaining a work permit. You will also be in a position to earn while you study. Such opportunities are rare in institutions in the third world.
  • A Catering course in China or Russia may be equivalent to a catering certificate from India. However, a catering course from New Zealand or Switzerland may be more recognized globally.

Post Educational Opportunities:

This is also a very important factor to consider when you select your overseas education. Post Educational Opportunities depend on the country you go to study. Immigrant accepting countries like Canada, New Zealand and Australia offer more potential for students who want to study, work and possibly live in these countries. Studying in countries like UK and Europe offers very little Post Educational opportunities and is limited to just course recognition with a possibility of a work permit for a limited period. In today’s world, selection of a course and the benefit it offers depends on the destination of the course. Until countries like the United Kingdom and the United States change their attitude to foreign students, The Student Herald recommends courses in Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

This is yet another important factor to be considered when considering overseas education. What is the cost of education overseas? How is this cost justified in terms of return of investment. Studying overseas is considered expensive and yet it is not expensive considering the earning potential of a student. Most countries allow students to work part time for 20 hours a week and at $10/Hour, this translates to an income of around $200 a week which ads up to around $840/Month. At the present conversion rate $840 translates to Rs 33600. If you have paid a tuition fee of Rs 30000 per month, you have still made more than your tuition fees just by working part time for a few hours a day.  Add to this the full-time work during vacation which will allow earning more.

  • Canada happens to be the best destination, offering the best return of investment for your money spent. The tuition fees for Canadian Colleges are less compared to any other developed country primarily because most educational institutions offering courses for foreign students are Canadian Government Aided Institutions. However, Canadian visa regulations seem un-reasonable even though once you get there as a student you have a well established “Immigration thru Education” track to become a permanent resident.
  • New Zealand today offers one of the best solutions for education and possible residency. New Zealand is a developed nation and is immigrant friendly. Opportunities exist in various areas and institutions are geared to accept foreign students offering the wide range of options to become a permanent resident. The Student Herald recommends New Zealand today and the best return on investment destination for students.

  • Australia also offers numerous courses and has a track for “Immigration thru Education”. However, Australia is not seen in the world as an immigrant friendly nation as much as Canada or New Zealand. Australia also scores well for the “Immigration thru Education” track.
  • USA: USA is a popular destination for studentship; however it does not have a clear “Immigration thru Education” track. The rules are vague and most students end up returning to their home country. USA stands out when it comes to course recognition and provides opportunities to obtain good jobs domestically as well as in other countries.
  • United Kingdom: The UK is actively promoting its universities in the third world and offers very little in terms of Post Educational opportunities which are limited to entry level jobs for a limited period through a work permit. UK sees education as a business opportunity. Students from the third world gain little other than course recognition when studying in the UK. A temporary work permit opportunity exists but opportunities are limited to low paying entry level jobs. Post educational opportunities are much more when you opt to do a course in Canada or New Zealand.
